Discovery Tasks
Social media
In health we were set a task that required us to choose a topic and research about it with our 5 big questions. The topic that I chose was Social media, once we picked our topic we then had to pick our 5 big questions. There were 3 different levels for us to choose from rookie, legend and pro, these levels gave us an idea of how hard we wanted to challenge ourselves. Because I picked pro I had to answer two red, two yellow and 1 green. Once our 5 big questions were answered we then had to describe 3 ways to improve and manage our health issue (topic). We did this by explaining it through a strategies table. I learnt new things on the way of researching about social media, and hope you did too. The last task was to create something fun about our issue. I made a kahoot which unfortunately couldn't let it go public but I have screenshots below to show I have made it. All three tasks were challenging, and even more challenging doing it on my own, next time I should be in a team to make it a bit easier on myself, but I am proud of my last results, and I have done my best!
You have linked your answers to the key concepts *You have matched or linked your question, answers and strategies to some or all of the key concepts. | You have answered all 5 BIG questions in detail * You have answered all of your questions. They are detailed and are in full sentences. |
You have described strategies that will improve outcomes in relation to your chosen issue *You have described ways in which people can help themselves to feel better/improve their wellbeing in relation to your topic. | Your work is well presented and you are proud of it *You submit work that you have put loads of effort into- both with answers and presentation. You have included pictures. *Your activity or creation is interesting and informative. |

Why would someone not be strongly for or against a younger audience using social media?
Social media is everything for this generation, not only is it where people communicate on, but it is also where most play games, take photos, search online, and even search for private matters... But what some people don't take notice of is that a phone is more than just a device used for entertainment, online is a dangerous place for all ages and that is why some prefer not to be on social media at such a young age.
Some adults like to be more careful than others as they know social media contains stalkers, pornogrophy, scams, identity theft, harassment the list goes on. Kids from ages 10-16 are most likely to have their own device nowadays, and that is entirely up to the parent or caregiver. A common issue that happens online is cyberbullying, then one thing leads to another and most of the time it can end badly, like suicide. Situations like this is what stops adults from letting their children have phones at a young age. So many things can go wrong in the media, and some see that and some don't.
On the other hand other adults think the opposite, of course they understand what happens online, and how bad it can be but to them something like that is rare. Giving a phone to a child just depends on what situation they are in, for some families maybe that person needs a phone to be able to call and text, or just simple reasons like giving a phone to distract the child. You could come across a 10 year old having a phone before a 14 year old, which you would immediately think they are spoiled, maybe they are but most of the time parents give their children devices for important reasons that some would find hard to imagine.
There are a million things that go on in parents/caregivers' heads like what are they doing, are they safe, who are they with, are they having fun, and so the solution to those thoughts are giving their kid a phone so they can call or text anytime. But the worry and scared thoughts for their child can affect their mental and emotional wellbeing as well as their social wellbeing.
In conclusion the two both have good reasons on why kids should and shouldn't have social media at a young age.
What influences young people to use social media?
Kids all over the world have their own role models whether it be their parents, siblings, family friends and sometimes celebrities. These days it's easy for someone to make a mistake online in seconds and it happens constantly, why? Because being on social media 24/7 or most of the time of your day doesn't make people realise you are wasting time, time that could be spent with your family, friends or partner and it really ruins your life. While kids are on social media everything that pops up on their feed is most likely beautiful girls or attractive boys and when they see that it makes them feel the need to compare themselves. This whole cycle starts from a kid or young teenager wanting to be like their role model, so what do they do? Create an account on every app to keep watch on the role model, so while time spent on those apps, which then leads to them posting the wrong things, talking to the wrong people and sometimes sharing the wrong information (catfish).
How does cyberbullying begin?
Throughout the year people have become more and more obsessed with social media. Not just because it's another way of communication but online is another way of seeing what your friends are upto, ordering clothes, playing games, technology is everything now. And some of these situations lead to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a person bullying another online, this can come out of jealousy, hate, revenge, etc but one thing leads to another and sometimes the result is suicide.
Bullying online can affect the person's mental and emotional wellbeing ( taha hinengaro ) as it hurts their feelings as well as their beliefs which is their spiritual well being ( taha wairua ). Depending on how far this goes cyberbullying can be short term or long term. When this happens the best thing to do is to save whatever has been sent and get an adult involved immediately.
Who is responsible for young people getting bullied online?
Everyone is different when it comes to social media, some parents prefer to let their child have a phone at a young age to keep in contact, some parents have a certain age when to give their child a phone or sometimes parents don't want their child/young teenager to have a phone at all. When a kid has been involved in a problem online the first people who are told or should be told are their caregivers/parents. No matter what the parent should take full responsibility, not just because that is their parent but also because the before giving their kid a phone what they should've thought about was what can he/she have on his/her phone, whose contacts can he/she have and even what he/she posts on their social media apps.
What do you conclude about people using social media?
Social media has taken over society, it can be good in ways, but in other ways it affects our social wellbeing, spiritual well being, mental and emotional wellbeing and even our physical wellbeing. What we see on the internet changes the way we talk to others, the things we believe in, the way we feel and the way we see ourselves. Sometimes all we need is just time off our screens, and use that time to spend with our family/friends. We don't realise that while we are on our devices, that could be us making memories to remember.

Strategies | What the strategies are | What areas of wellbeing the strategy will improve and how | Short term and/or long term |
Strategy 1 | Not be on social media 24/7 | This will improve spiritual, social, and mental and emotional well being, because it changes the way you are to people in person, and it changes your beliefs on simple things, as well as it makes you feel better and free. | Long |
Strategy 2 | Block people who harrass or harm you | It should improve your mental and emotional wellbeing, because it should help you feel safe and cautious as you know they won't get in contact again. | Long |
Strategy 3 | Avoid unhealthy sites | Some people think there is nothing wrong with this problem but doing this can help improve you on your social well being, mental and emotional well being, physical wellbeing and you spiritual well being. Of Course this is a normal thing for everyone but what everyone needs nowadays is time with friends and family and not on their phones. | Long |

Electricity
Electricity
Static electricity - A build up of electrical charges on an object.
Current electricity - A flow of electric charge.
Electrical charge - Electrical particles that negatively charge.
Circuit - A system that provides a pathway for electrical current to flow through.
Cell - Supplies energy to circuit, by pushing current from positive to negative end.
Voltmeter- A device used to measure voltage, or electrical potential energy difference.
Static electricity | Current electricity | |
What is it caused by? | two objects rubbing against each other with one supplying electrons to the other | Current electricity is powered from wires |
Do the negative charges move? | yes negative charges can move freely | No negative charges don't move in current electricity |
Does it power appliances? | Any source of electrical energy tries to maintain a continuous flow of charges between two points |
