Treaty Of Waitangi

In 1830 there were 100k Maori and 100-200 Europeans living in New Zealand. The behaviour of the whalers, the missionaries desire to help protect Maori rights and the muskets wars were reasons that a treaty was needed. The declaration of independence was another contributing factor to the need for was another contributing factor to the need for a treaty.

One reason that a treaty was needed was the lawless behaviour of some of the British Settlers like the whalers. Majority of the whalers were from Britain, when they'd come from shore they drank, they fought and some also spread diseases. Paul Russel/Korerareka was the biggest port in New Zealand at that time which then became the Hellhole of the pacific. Although these whalers caused problems they also came with good trades.

Another reason that a treaty was needed to protect Maori rights. One group that felt strongly about this was the missionaries. The Musket Wars had decimated many tribes, Henry Williams the leader of the missionaries, helped break the tension between Hokianga tribes. Missionaries gained a reputation among Maori as valuable peace makers.

Another Reason that a treaty was needed was the Musket Wars. The Maori had many strong close distance weapons, but when the Europeans introduced the Muskets it completely changed everything. So the Maori traded food, for example fruit, veges or 200 baskets of potatoes, in order to get stronger weapons (Muskets) for their protection.

In conclusion, a treaty was needed to make peace between the English and the Maori. The Whalers, the Missionaries and the Musket Wars were one of the few reasons for this treaty to be made. The Treaty of Waitangi was and still is significant till this day.

Creative writing

The Shed

The breeze caused the big, dark, claw-like bark to shift roughly side to side. Leaving a cold whip of air to brush against her skin. Some kind of dirt smell entered her nostrils. All she could hear was the sharp whispers caused by the wind ; and so as the night blew colder, the urge to go back grew stronger. But no, it was too late for that now. Only a few more steps and she could finally say she was the first to step into it.

The closer she got, the flashbacks hit. “no one has ever made it out”, “Some say it is your worst nightmare”, “there's no way anyone can do it”. “No! I can do it, I know I can, c’mon Sarah you got this”. The shadowed creaky bark hands hung over taller, but at last she made it. She swung her head around with regret, tugging onto the thick wool jumper she was given as a gift. No one had ever come back from this. Could she really do it? One step, then another, and another. The tip of her finger pushed against the old, moldy door slightly, causing it to creak slowly...Flashing lights beamed through, an ear-splitting ringing crawled through her eardrums. “Huh”.

It left her speechless, suddenly night became day, the wind became soft, not cold instead warm. It was a whole new world. The dirt smell vanished but now berries, candy, sweetness...happiness? Her mind went blank, “how, what?”, no matter how many times she blinked, the same image appeared.

How could this be? Why has no one ever made it back? Has anyone ever actually been? Questions filled her up with confusion, should I enjoy this or leave? Cautiously strolling along, Sarah focused on how suspicious this was. Although she was a bit scared, how could she not be curious about the place? But then, she stopped, oh how she couldn't believe her eyes. While glaring upwards, beanstalk smooth barked bodys peaked over, gracefully swinging. Whilst covering the glowing, hot ball up in the sky, leaving it to reflect off of the calm lake. White, angelic swans were gliding along, and bunnies crouched against the Vibrant flowers springing across the ground.

As she skipped past to look over, a big rush of steaming cold water crashed down, causing a satisfying sound to fill her ears. The smell slowly went from sweet, to good warm, mouth watering baking. She spun around in joy, and screamed with laughter! “WHOOOO HOoooooooo”.  “SARRAAAHHH! Wake up, you’re gonna be late”. “vrrrm , vrrmm” the alarm clock went.

Written text essay

ON THE SIDEWALK BLEEDING by Evan Hunter

Question:Describe at least one memorable idea in the text. Explain why this idea was memorable to you.

‘On The Sidewalk Bleeding’ a short text written by Evan Hunter, is about a young 16 year old boy who is stabbed losing his life because of a printing on his jacket “The Royals”. Andy slowly dies on the sidewalk bleeding, failing to be saved not once but 3 times, two of them being unfortunate and the other because of the jacket he wore. There are several reasons why this key idea was memorable to me, one is that we shouldn't make assumptions about others because of what we see or hear, another reason is we shouldn't take life for granted and lastly we shouldn't lose hope even in our toughest moments.

The incident of the couple finding Andy helped me to understand the important idea of how we shouldn't make assumptions about others because of what we see or hear. Failing to be saved the first time by the drunk man, the couple also fail to save Andy, but purposely. We see this in the text when Freddie and Angela discuss what to do, but seeing Andy's jacket with the print “Royals' ' Freddie says "I don't know. I don't know. I don't want to get mixed up in this. He's a Royal. We help him, and the Guardians will be down on our necks. I don't want to get mixed up in this, Angela” The both of them see a hurt boy, and as soon as they see the print that's all that matters. The author wants us to consider that we are all human, no matter the title or print. This made the reader feel disappointed because they made a decision knowingly unlike the drunk man. In the real world this idea is important because this really happens, and could happen to anyone.

In the text when Andy finally realises he is dying helped me to understand another important idea which is not taking life for granted ; because it showed me how quick things could turn out in just a second. We see this in the text when it says “He was filled with sadness that his life would be over at sixteen. He felt all at once as if he had never done anything, never seen anything, never been anywhere.” This means that he is finally accepting that he is really dying and it is too late to be saved. The author wants us to consider that everything we receive or have we should be thankful for, anything could happen in just a few seconds or minutes. We don't know how much something means to us till it's gone, so make the most of every moment. This made the reader feel sad because he lost his life to a silly print on his jacket. People lose their lives to things like this in the real world, so this idea is really important to remember.

At the very end of the story when Andy is fighting to hold on it helped me to understand one last important idea, not losing hope even in our toughest moments. We see this in the text when Andy removes his jacket despite being in so much pain “He rolled away from the jacket and lay quite still, breathing heavily, listening to the sound of his breathing and the sounds of the rain and thinking: Rain is sweet, I'm Andy.” Even if he was dying he knew the jacket was the one thing stopping him from getting help, so taking it off could finally help him be at peace. This made me realise that no matter how hard life gets, keep pushing, even if the world seems to be unfair, keep going. In the real world people fight their own battles, everyone has their own stories, but in the end we all have to keep fighting and not give up.

In the text “On the sidewalk bleeding” a memorable idea was that we shouldn't make assumptions about others. This idea was memorable to me because it helped me to understand that anything could happen in just a split second, life is too short to judge others on what you see. Of all the reasons, the most important reason is how we shouldn't take life for granted, and look at the bigger picture with things, don't be too quick to judge because what you see isn't always what it looks like. We all tend to make assumptions, it's just us being humans, but if we choose to hurt others and hate others because of the judgements we make, we will waste the time we have in our lives. For example the stabber in “On the sidewalk bleeding” stabs Andy because of the jacket, he doesn't know who he is he didn't stab Andy he stabbed the jacket. Don't be too quick to judge others, life is too short.

Music reflection

I enjoyed music last term because I had the opportunity to try learning how to play instruments the piano and guitar. I learnt that there are many different vocal skills people can use like tenor, falsetto, soprano etc. Unfortunately I did not get to perform as I had an appointment with the doctor, though I was excited to because the song I was singing was a really nice song. I do love music and love to listen and sing in my own time, but I don't think it is something I want to do in school and further on. No I wont be continuing this class, but I've had fun learning all about it and will keep music as a little hobby of mine.

Yellow Brick Road

Witi Ihimaera is from Gisborne and was the first Maori to publish both a book of short stories and a novel. Hes had five books of his adapted into films.

When I hear "Yellow Brick Road" I think of a road made of brick, rich people driveways. Or "The Wizard Of Oz".

Matiu thinks because Wellington is more wealthier then Waituhi, that is why his dad moved them for the money.

The difference between the two places is that Waituhi has more Maoris and Wellington has more Pakehas.

Matius dad told Uncle Same that he wants to start a new life, and give his kids a better upbringing because he knows what its like to grow up with nothing.

Matiu starts off by being excited of moving, but then as they get there he slowly becomes nervous, as to if they could or would ever go back.

Witi Ihimaera used "Yellow Brick Road" also known from the book "The Wizard Of Oz", as a way of saying this is their journey and to keep going, soon they'll be there, "follow, follow, follow".

The voice

There are many different types of voices in music, there is soprano mainly females that sing with a higher pitch, tenor could be a low female voice or male voice, falsetto is a male singing really high and there's also bass which is very very low voice sung by boys.

Acapella music is sung by peoples voices no instruments nothing but their voices.

With performing or singing warming up your vocals is very helpful. It not only stretches out your vocal chords but it should help with your whole body your face, chest stomach and it should help with your breathing aswell.

Vocal range is how low someone can go with their voice and how high they can go. 5 good examples are Mariah carey five-octave range and has the ability to reach beyond the 7th-octive.

A fewe celebs vocal range-

Ariana Grande, D3 - B5 - E7, Ariana is a light soprano

Miley Cryus can be a soprano but her voice is slightly thicker so technically she is a mezzo-soprano.

What does music mean to me?

So far the only performance i've ever done is the moana production that happened recently during the holidays. Ive always had a thing with music, its just something I listen to or enjoy when I need to breathe. For me I can listen to any type of song that fits my mood, one day I could be listening to RnB, then switch onto some pop, or rap, reggae, maybe not hard metal. Im a fan of destinys child, their songs just hit the spot. Sons of Zion is another good group I tend to listen to from time to time, and L.A.B love their music aswell. In music I just want to build up my conifdence as a singer, and I also want to learn how to play some instruments mainly the guitar. Ive always loved music, but sharing it with others is something im not too sure about. I chose music just to see where I can go with it.

The Real One

In English,  we had to make a short film similar to the court scene in Merchant of Venice. My group decided to make a film about a love triangle. The characters were Jack, Sam, Amy and Lia. We tied our love triangle to Bassanio, Antonio and Portia, as Jack, Sam and Lia. In our film there is a 3 friend-group friendship (Jack,Sam and Amy). These friends make a promise to each other which is to never break their friendship no matter what, so this "promise" they make is the "promise" that was made to Shylock. As they get older Jack meets a new girl (Lia) who he instantly falls for, little does he know his close friend Sam happens to meet the same girl who he becomes interested in. Although Lia had the just met the two of them, her heart beats faster around Jack, so the two love birds grow closer. Watching from afar Amy and Sam both get jealous, Amy has always had a soft spot for Jack, so Amy and Sam plan something to split them up. This "plan" of theirs is what tieing to Shylock's "revenge", so of course just like Shylock their "plan" doesn't work out and Jack and Lia have a happy ending.

As you can see we tried our best to use different film techniques, 2 of the techniques we used were birds eye view and medium close up. When we shot the birds eye view we tried getting the views to see that Sam and Amy are about to plan something with their phones. During the scene where they make a "promise" we used a medium close up, so that the viewers can see that they a comfortable and close friends hanging out.

Making this film was really challenging, especially because most of us weren't that confident with the whole acting thing, but glad everything came together in the end, next time we should think carefully about who should do what role. If I were to do this again, I would put effort into to planning, because we struggled a lot with what to do next, if our plan was structured better maybe it would've been less stressful.

Happy broadcast

In social studies we have been looking at a cool website happy broadcast (take a look). Here's a few of the many interesting things I found. I think despite how nasty we've been to the sea, and our environment, most of us are trying to help, and change the world for the better. I like how Paris is aiming for more green, and that Spain is thinking about not only the bears but at the same time thinking about climate change, and how that affects some animals. As days past we are slowly damaging the earth, but if we do the little things like putting rubbish in the right bins, picking up litter if we see it, using recyclable items, and more, then maybe the world can change.

Marble dying

In textiles we have been doing dying experiments. Down below is photo of how mine went, it was super easy and fun. First we got a sheet of material, and wet it enough for it to be damp, then we added a few marbles and wrapped rubber bands around them to be secure. Once that was done we put in colours of our choice, I picked purple, blue and pink. I'm happy with my end result, as this was what I was hoping for. This was a fun activity to do and would be nice to show to others.

Ocean dump

In social studies we have been learning about the ocean dump and climate change. We were told to make a news article about what caused this and the effects. Here is a link to a video explaining what kind of a world we have created, check it out. video

Anti-Vietnam war song

 War

The Vietnam war created chaos for a lot of people, so Edwin Starr and many others used music as their response, which gave this war its considerable impact. This song "War" was recorded first by the group Temptations but Edwin Starr's version caught more attention. Edwin's powerful soulful voice explains about why this war is pointless, and how we are losing innocent lives to it.
(take a listen) Song

Lyrics
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, why'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
War, whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it nothing

Science - Making salts

Making Salts

Aim -  To produce sodium chloride salt by carrying out a neutralisation reaction.

Equipment - 50 mL and 200 mL bealers, dilute HCI (hydrochloric acid), dilute NaOH (sodium hydroxide), 25 mL measuring cylinder, a glass stirring rod, spotting tile, universal indicator solution, tripod, gauze mat, bunsen burner, evaporating basin.

Method -

1. Using the measuring cylinder measure 10 mL of HCI and pour it into your 50 mL beaker. Add dilute NaOH a few drops at a time while stirring with the glass rod.

2. Every 10-15 drops stop adding the NaOH and use the glass stirring rod to transfer a drop of the solution to a spotting tile. Test its pH using universal indicator.

3. Keep adding NaOH and testing the solution by repeating step 2. Ad you get closer to neutral you may need to test the solutoin after every drop.

4. Pour the neutral solution into an evaporating basin and evaporate the water out of the solution using the equipment set up shown above.

Beatles perspectives

Beatlemania

Perspective for -
The main people who love The Beatles were the ladies, because The Beatles sang sexual or deep meaningful songs and the girls loved it. Not only was this something different but The Beatles were entertaining, and they created excitement. People went crazy over them, screaming, crying, throwing their panties, they did outrageous things.

Perspective against -
During this chaotic event, the older generation didn't like the idea of what The Beatles created. They thought the songs they were singing were putting nasty ideas into their kids, things like sex, drugs, intense love, the parents only had passion for the simple songs. This new band was the talk, everyone loved them so who wouldn't want to see they perform live, the kids would go to their parents and beg to buy tickets to go, which then created another reason of why the parents didn't like The Beatles.

wanaga lunches

Lunches

This year Hornby, as well as the rest of NZ is trying something new. We have been receiving ogranised lunches for us everyday interval. The usual time we would have our interval break is when we go to our wananga/form class to eat together, we spend the first 15 minutes eating then we go out for the rest of break. So far the lunches have been good, knowing they have to make over 300 lunches every morning. The photo is what we had on Tuesday, we have different meals everyday, down below is the menu. My wananga class has been doing something a bit different to the others, everyday we set up our class putting the tables in the middle and eat together like a family. Although most of us inlcuding me dont like it, our teacher is trying to get us to do things "out of our comfort zone". I think we should just eat at our own tables.

The Beatles

The Beatles

Here comes the sun - (click to listen)

This song, by the famous boy band The Beatles, is about how there will be another day, another chapter, another chance, a new start. So if you're going through something, or having a rough time holding on, there's always another day, where the sun will come out.

Here comes the sun do, do, do

Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right

Show dont tell narrative openings

Sentence starting with the "show dont tell" sentences I made

(sentence starter)
She yelled over the top of her voice expressing her emotions
- As Sarah yelled over the top of her voice, she couldn't help but cry because of how shocking the news she had just received was. Finding out she had not made the cut, how could she not be upset.

(sentence starter) She screamed with excitement while running up to him for a hug
- She had been waiting and waiting for this day to come and it was finally here, she ran up to him with a big grin, and leaped into his arms while letting out a big scream. Finally being with him made all her stress flow away.

(sentence starter) The swan glided gently across as down below viewed a reflection of the bright blue sky
- Walking beside a big glossy lake, the sun and the fluffy clouds reflected off, as a graceful swan glided across. Hearing the birds chirp, and the trees sway, today is going to be a good day.

The Haka

What is the line reffering to?
Tis death tis death (or I may die) Tis life tis life! (Or I may live)
I think they are saying bring it on you'll either live or die.
It was intimidation tactic to scare the enemies. Te Rauparaha started it to tell other tribes if they broke the rules this is what would happen. The haka was performed either on the battle field prior to engagement with the enemy, or as the war party was leaving their own village en route to a battle. Because, there are no longer war between the countries you will now see the haka being used before rugby games and performances.

significance of WW1

In social studies we are learning about the history of the ANZAC's. The notes of the Last Post are played by a military bugler, trumpeting the notes of song the song for the lost and the dead. This song is played to remember the dead, and to honour those we lost in war. The Last Post has been around for hundreds of years, at first it was played to wake the soldiers up, get ready for lunch, take part it in military exercises or time to turn in for the night, it was not until the mid-1800s that the Last Post changed in its use and significance. Every year 25th April we take the time to remember those who died in battle, some attend dawn service where people from all around the country go to ANZAC cove to mourn and remember

Music - genre

Chloe and I are going to be performing the song isn't she lovely - by Stevie Wonder,  For now we both are singing still deciding on which instruments to play along with us. This song is talking about how lovely that girl is or how admirable she is. We both have never performed in front of people singing, so it will be quite nerve wrecking, but this is good, as it is something out of our comfort zones. We are learning how we are planning on singing the song then we'll decide if we want to go ahead with the instruments or not (piano or guitar).

Emotions

In wananga class we are learning about our feelings/emotions. It is hard to talk about how we feel and what we are going through, with others. Rumi's poem "guest house" has taught us that, we as the guest house should allow our emotions in and welcome them, make sure we understand that they have entered.

Parihaka

Tim Finn's song Parihaka is a way of remembering what happened to the people of Parihaka, and how much of an impact it has made worldwide.

In the song he mentions "His children's children's wearing the white plume" While the arresting happened, Te Whit and Tohus followers wore white feathers which symbolised peace. Tim Finns sings "you cant pull out the foots" referring to you can dislocate us but you can't take away the culture, and the land our ancestors had found.

A line he sings that showed how determined they were "rise up, defend yourself, never give in" shows that during the times when they all felt like giving up they kept pushing through "look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti" try looking for hope.

This song mentions what happened and how the people dealt with it, Tim Finn explained in the song "To weep for my last brother, they gather still, the cloud of Taranaki" Which is just saying still till this day we will remeber, and acknowledge what our ancestors did for us.

Slam Poetry

Out of all 3 videos I watched my favourtie one was "I'm not gay, but i'd go gay for John Key" by Brad McCormick. In his poem he talks about how much he "loves" John Key the prime minister. Brads Poem was funny "So packaway your jibes, if you say his vibe should be statseman like, confident, strong, you got it all wrong! Let that accent fly John, tell us how you care about, ordianry New Zealanders". He had a good way of keeping the audience hooked in as he kept cracking with more and more jokes.

Language features

Metaphor - A metaphor is a term you would use to symbolise another thing. For example a bright and sunny day written in a poem could be a way a metaphorical representation of happiness.

- The blanket was a cover of lava

- She sang like an angel from above

Simile - A simile is something people use when comparing two things, so highlighting the similarities between the two. An example "He is as tall as a giraffe".

Sensory language

First day of school

The Trees brushed against the air causing anything and everything to make a shift. As their feet clomped along the hard concrete ground, I took a sniff in and felt the sweet scent of Manuka flowers enter my nostrils. Walking along I listened to the children playing around with laughter, while nervously holding tight onto the strings of my bag worrying about how my first day would go. Quickly swallowing my strawberry sweet gum I made my way into class.

- In English class we are learning to use different language phrases or features. Today I wrote a paragraph using sensory language not using the words saw, heard, smelled, tasted and felt.

Sprituals

African slaves would use songs also known as "spirituals" to keep faith, and just hold on a little longer. Singing was a tradition brought from Africa by the first slaves, this would be used as secret messages, kill bordem, funerals, or celebrations. As the white would torture the black, the Africans way of helping each other was singing cultural songs to communicate. A very famous lady named Harriet Tubman managed to escape around 70 slaves doing 13 trips from all around the slave trades all the way up north where slavery wasn't legal. She did this by using the underground railroad which was really a human train lead by Harriet Tubman, Not only that but she also used a song called Wade in the water to communicate with everyone. Spirituals/songs is a big thing in the African culture as it helped them have hope, a good example is sweet chariot. Racism is still evident today because of slavery years and years ago, but people are spreading the word "black lives matter" because of what happened and what has recently happened. Millions of people are acknowledging this through posts, videos, and even music. Black lives matter.

Harriet used Wade in the water to tell everyone to get in the water which would wash the scent off them.

Children wade, in the water
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in red
Wade in the water
Must be the children that Moses led
God's gonna trouble the water
Wade in the water, wade in the water children
Wade in the water,
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in white
Wade in the water
Must be the children of the Israelite
Oh, God's gonna trouble the water
Wade in the water, wade in the water children
Wade in the water,
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in blue
Wade in the water
Must be the children that's coming through,
God's gonna trouble the water, yeah
Wade in the water,
